Being impacted by ā€˜disruptiveā€™ technologies and innovations has become the norm for most librarians, technologists and other information professionals. Join us in this fast-moving session as we peer into our crystal ball and look at many of the emerging technologies that have already begun to appear on the horizon and others that many experts say are destined for our future. What the Heck is HTML5 & CSS3? An Introductory Workshop

    No full text
HTML5 is the next generation of HTML and, though it is still a work in progress , many of the new HTML5 tags are already supported in newer versions of the popular browsers. It promises to push the limits of web development, allowing you to build a new class of user experiences. CSS3 is the newest standard for CSS and includes many exciting new functions and features which gives increased control of the ā€˜look and feelā€™ of your web pages. While both HTML5 and CSS3 have been around for awhile, they continue to be the latest ā€œbuzzā€ in the web world and are now just beginning to be more widely implemented by web developers. This session will give a ā€œlibrarianā€™s perspectiveā€ on these new web standards. Through a general overview and explanation of HTML5 and CSS3, and showing examples of how they are being implemented on the web, the presenters will demonstrate what the ā€˜hub-bubā€™ is all about. This workshop session will be highly interactive and include some small group and hands-on activities. Make sure to bring your laptop or mobile web device. To access the full presentation for this session, use the \u27Download\u27 button located to the right. Creating an OER Toolkit: Offering Customized Solutions and Reducing Barriers in a Small Liberal Arts College

From the Chapter introduction: Colleges and universities are increasingly engaging with open access (OA), open educational resources (OERs), and open textbooks. At Macalester College, an exclusively undergraduate institution of roughly 2,000 students, we have long been involved with OA initiatives. We believe strongly in the free and fair exchange of information, which is the foundation of open access. In this chapter we focus on our experience supporting OERs, which, according to the Hewlett Foundation (n.d.), are ā€œteaching, learning and research materials in any mediumā€”digital or otherwiseā€”that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits no-cost access, use, adaptation and redistribution by others with no or limited restrictionsā€ (ā€œOpen Educational Resources: OER Definedā€). Our background with OA initiatives has served as the foundation for our foray into OERs and open textbooks
